MidYIS and Winchester College late-list entry

Winchester College's main 13+ admissions route is well known: candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test in Year 6, followed by interview and the school's own entrance assessments. That process is widely documented.

Less widely known is how late-list candidates are now assessed. Late-list applicants — children applying outside the standard Year 6 timeline, for occasional places as they arise — now sit MidYIS as part of their assessment.

This is a recent change, and much of the preparation material online still refers only to the ISEB pre-test, because that remains the route most families follow. Families coming to the late-list route can find there is very little information, and almost no familiarisation material, aimed at the test their child will actually sit.

What is MidYIS?

MidYIS (the Middle Years Information System) is an adaptive assessment produced by Cambridge Insight (formerly CEM, the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring). It is used by schools in many countries as a baseline measure of aptitude rather than taught knowledge — it is designed to reveal potential, not how much of a syllabus a child has covered. It is taken online and adapts in difficulty as the child works through it.

• Vocabulary (10 minutes) — word fluency and understanding. Children choose the word or phrase that matches the one they are shown.
• Maths (25 minutes) — logical thinking and working with numbers. The content is common to all maths curricula for this age, so children aren't advantaged or disadvantaged by which syllabus they've followed.
• Non-verbal (5 minutes) — recognising shapes, matching patterns, and spatial reasoning, including visualising 3D shapes.
• Skills (15 minutes) — proofreading, and perceptual speed and accuracy: scanning, skimming, and working quickly and accurately under time pressure.

Can you prepare for it?

MidYIS is deliberately designed to be difficult to coach — it measures aptitude, not revision. But there is a real difference between a child who has never seen the format and one who knows what to expect. Familiarity with the four sections, the timing, and the style of question means a child can walk in calm and spend their energy on the test itself rather than on working out what's being asked. The Skills section in particular — proofreading and speeded accuracy — is unlike anything in most school work, and is worth seeing beforehand.
